Shitamachi literally means a low town, so this word refers to areas that are geographically and economically lower especially in Tokyo. This is not the Tokyo of skyscrapers and neon lights. However, you will see the other side of Tokyo. If you take this route, you won't see anything touristy, but rather something very authentic that you couldn't discover on your own. Let's cycle through shitamachi in the breeze and see the authentic everyday life in Tokyo!

Where do locals live and how? On this route, you will see the everyday life in Tokyo. You won't see any glaring neon lights, but you might see some laundry hanging on the balcony or hear some shopkeepers calling out to sell their sweets or vegetables.

Tokyo is full of beautiful parks and riversides, and on this route, you will get to cycle in Ueno Park and along the Sumida River at Shioiri Park. But you won't just enjoy the breeze; you'll also uncover the hidden history of the park, which is the true value of a guided bike tour.

Sensoji Temple in Asakusa

Ueno Park
You'll enjoy a relaxing ride through one of Tokyo's largest public parks. We'll cycle alongside a scenic pond, climb a short but fun hill, and take in the lush greenery. Feel the refreshing breeze as we cruise through the park!
There is also a very intriguing pine tree in this park, one that grows in a circle. The original was so famous that it was featured in a celebrated ukiyo-e woodblock print during the samurai era. The tree you see today is a recreation, but the shape is exactly the same. Let's find it together.
Kanei-ji Temple
Between Ueno Park and Yanaka, Kanei-ji Temple stands very quietly. The over-400-year-old temple has a quiet dignity. Knowing the historical background of this temple makes the tour more meaningful.
Yanaka Temples
Welcome to Yanaka. This shitamachi area is getting more attention now from tourists. This is probably because there are old wooden houses and many temples lining the backstreets. But why has Yanaka become such a traditional neighborhood? Knowing why makes the ride far more interesting.
Yanaka Starbucks
You might say, "Starbucks? We have Starbucks in my country!" What if I told you that the Starbucks in Yanaka is different from any other? It was designed by HAGISO, a local Yanaka firm, as a two-story wooden building modeled on the prewar shopfronts that still line this street. A brand-new Starbucks, built to look like it has always been here.
Minowa
Ah, where is it? Most tourists, and even many locals, have never heard of Minowa. That's because it's exactly the kind of place you pass without noticing. Quietly alive beside the busy Route 4, this neighborhood shows you how local life actually works in Tokyo.
Adachi Fish Market
Many tourists visit Tsukiji or Toyosu looking for a vibe at a fish market. If you are looking for an authentic local fish market, Adachi Fish Market is for you! This fish market is definitely non-touristy, so enjoy the real atmosphere of a market selling lots of fresh seafood.
Nakacho No Ie, a Traditional House
If you love quiet traditional Japanese houses, Nakacho No Ie offers an amazing experience. You will have an opportunity to sit and relax on a tatami mat floor, hearing the sounds of birds or insects. This house is not always open, so it's a treat when it is.
Shioiri
You will ask me again, "where is it?" In the past, this area had no train station nearby and was surrounded by the Sumida River. It was hard to access this area. Now it has two bridges across the river, and there is a beautiful large park called Shioiri Park. You can enjoy biking along the river now!
Sumida River and Tokyo Skytree
At the finale of this bike tour, you will see a magnificent view of Tokyo Skytree, which has become a new symbol of Tokyo and the shitamachi area. You might see the tower without this tour, but it will mean more to you after learning a lot about shitamachi.

Let's Ride Under the Sunny Sky!
On one beautiful day, we rode this route. Even though we've had a lot of rain lately, we were lucky enough to cycle under a beautiful blue sky.
Epilogue
Actually, this is our fourth ride together. Whenever they come to Tokyo, we enjoy the rides. At first, they were my lovely guests, and now they are my dearest friends from Australia!

Of course, we could not visit Tokyo without spending a day with our good friend, Kazuma from @tokyobikeblissThis time he took us thru Yanaka which is a traditional downtown neighbourhood (shitamachi).Then to a railway themed cafe for morning tea. The seats were from old trains.Along the Sumida River where we saw Tokyo Skytree. Also in the same photo is Asahi Group Head Office (which if you look close enough) resembles a glass of beer with the froth on top.Now the golden sculpture on the low building next to it, is said to resemble the burning heart of Asahi. However locals and tourists refer to it as the golden 💩.We ended up at a small shop that specialises in Soya Sauce (who knew), where we were able to have tastings. Probably needed some dim sims to really get the taste 😝Sadly, we have to wait till next time to catch up again with our No: 1 Tokyo friend.
